(ANSA) – LAKE CHARLES, AUGUST 29 – The death toll from Hurricane Laura over Louisiana and Texas has risen to at least 14. Local and health authorities report this.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards confirmed that at least 10 people have lost their lives in his state, including five due to carbon monoxide produced by portable generators used inside buildings due to a lack of electricity. Another 4 died from falling trees, while a man drowned in the sinking of his boat caused by the storm. Almost 500,000 homes have been without power since yesterday. Also in Texas, 3 of the 4 victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Before reaching the United States and becoming a tropical storm last Thursday, Hurricane Laura caused 31 deaths in Haiti and 4 in the Dominican Republic last Sunday.
