Brazil: new restrictions on abortion in case of rape – Ultima Ora

(ANSA) – BRAZIL, AUGUST 29 – Basile tightens abortions in case of rape. The Ministry of Health has issued new restrictions on abortion, including an obligation for medical personnel to offer women the opportunity to view the embryo or fetus by ultrasound. The woman who chooses an abortion will also have to “detail” what happened and be warned that she risks taking legal action if she does not prove that she was raped. Furthermore, the rape will necessarily be reported to the police, whether the woman wants it or not.

Brazil, led by far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, and where conservative Catholic and evangelical churches are particularly powerful, allows abortion only in case of rape, danger to the woman’s life or serious congenital problems of the fetus. However, even these exceptions are poorly accepted by the religious right.

The new restrictions were enacted after protests over the case of a 10-year-old girl, allegedly raped by her uncle, who was denied the possibility of abortion by authorities in her home state, Espirito Santo. Finally, the girl flew to Recife where she was operated on while a violent right-wing demonstration was taking place in front of the hospital. (HANDLE).
