TURIN. Just over half an hour of rain. No hail, but violent gusts of wind of up to a hundred kilometers per hour. That was enough to review in Turin the scenarios already experienced about ten days ago – it was Monday, August 17 – when the metro had also had to close two stations to the public. Of course, yesterday’s storm no longer left an underwater city behind. And yesterday it was much worse in the center of Asti, which ended up in the water and was without power for hours. But it was one more demonstration that the underground collection system – from the many, too many inspection pits that deserve further attention – is no longer able to withstand the effects of a climate that is not crazy but changeable, because it is becoming more tropical.
The rain had been expected for days: on Thursday Arpa had confirmed in its bulletin the status of “yellow alert” due to the possibility of landslides, landslides and floods. And experts from the Piedmont Weather Center had highlighted the risk of major hailstorms. In short, it came out better than expected, but the damage is counted anyway.
Large branches have fallen on the street and on the cars parked in Corso Dante, Corso Marche and Corso Regina Margherita. Firefighters had to work hard to free Largo Berardi, where fallen trees trapped three motorists. The drains and pipes have not done their duty on the sides of Corso Unione Sovietica, in some sections of Corso Ferrucci and Corso Galileo Ferraris. The streets of Borgo Aurora are also being soaked, where the latest works by Smat have in any case prevented a repetition of the disaster experienced last year, when rescuers were forced to move between the houses in inflatable boats.
Bad weather touched the belt, thankfully only slightly. The only interventions in Rivalta and Nichelino, precisely because of plants that gave way and collapsed on the road. In the municipality of the Sangone valley, the problem occurred in via Mellano. Police also working in Carmagnola, over some roofs and a wall knocked down by the wind in via Racconigi. On the other hand, the collapse of a centenary tree in the square in front of the Church of the Holy Trinity, in Nichelino, could have more serious consequences. There are no injuries, but a cordoned off area to better assess the damage to municipal furniture.
Returning to the forecasts, bad weather will continue to be the protagonist also for today, with also important storms expected over Turin from the afternoon. The sun will return on Sunday, but with decidedly lower temperatures compared to the heat of recent days. It will be just a break: the summer heat should return in a week. –
