(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, AUGUST 28 – She had been on a hunger strike for 238 days because she wanted a fair trial after being sentenced to 13 years in prison for “belonging to a criminal organization.” Last night she died in a hospital in Istanbul.
The case concerns 42-year-old lawyer Ebru Timtik. His law firm broke the news of his death. “Ebru Timtik, a partner in our firm, died a martyr,” read a tweet. The woman went on a hunger strike last February to demand a fair trial. Together with her colleague Aytac Unsal, also on hunger strike, Timtik was part of the Contemporary Lawyers Association, specialized in the defense of politically sensitive cases. The Turkish authorities accuse this association of being linked to the radical Marxist-Leninist organization Dhkp-C, a group that has carried out several attacks and is defined as a “terrorist” by Ankara and its Western allies. Ebru Timtik had defended in particular the family of Berkin Elvan, a teenager who died in 2014 from injuries sustained during the anti-government protests in Gezi Park in 2013. The lawyer’s death sparked numerous anti-government protests in Istanbul .
