Professor Bianchi, what will the post-Coronavirus school be like?
“Many say that after this emergency we must return to normality: instead, we must have the capacity to get out of it by innovating.”
Despite everything, Patrizio Bianchi is optimistic, former rector of the University of Ferrara, then counselor in Emilia Romagna, now holder of the UNESCO Chair in Education for Growth and Equality and head of the MIUR working group for the resumption of lessons.
“This emergency forced us to ask ourselves some questions that we had left behind. The first: what is school for today? As a child, he provided me with notions and tools to elaborate them and then separated the students from those who continued their studies and of those who had to learn a profession. Now that we are inundated with information, the school must teach us about critical capacity, the conscious use of tools and creating communities, that is, working together. ”
What will be left of distance learning? New York Governor Cuomo even says it should be normal.
“The virus literally rushed us into the digital world: let’s not waste what we’ve learned in the past few months.”
Do you think that the curriculum should be changed: the subjects and the way of studying them?
“The curriculum must be more flexible and we must improve the autonomy of the schools: a national system is needed to support fragile areas, such as the suburbs, and then we must make room for more informal teaching, improving music, the history of the art, education, civic, expressive capacity ».
They will say that the students’ Italian and math results are not brilliant.
«I’ll give you an example: once to know who Carneade was, you had to read Manzoni, today you only need to carry a mobile phone. I mean that we don’t lack information, but what we don’t know is to use it well ».
Can teachers work at this new school?
“We have to invest in teacher training. Unfortunately, the latest reforms have been done as if it were a matter of public order, not having a vision.
What will your return be like in September?
«We are working in three scenarios depending on the health conditions. And in different ways for different grades of school: the smallest and children with disabilities are the ones who need to be in the classroom the most. The older ones may be a little more autonomous. ”
Will you come back in stages?
“We will try to guarantee the presence in the school as much as possible: I only have a foreclosure. I do not want children in the classroom like the Chinese, in the school with their hats and divided by Plexiglas. The school must guarantee us the right to be us without leaving anyone behind.
