The Bologna Court of Appeal imposed a total of almost 700 years in prison on the 118 defendants in the ‘Aemilia’ maxi trial against the ‘Ndrangheta in Emilia-Romagna, held in the bunker room of Dozza prison. The Attorney General had been calling for sanctions for about a thousand years. Those convicted were 91, while there were 27 among acquittals, acquittals and prescriptions. For the vast majority of the defendants, the accusation of mafia association was confirmed, but there were still significant penalties: for example, Michele Bolognino, who was sentenced to 28 years in the first instance, spent 21 years and three months on appeal, while Gaetano Blasco was sentenced to 22 years and 11 months compared to the 25 years and six months requested by the Prosecutor’s Office.

The judges then confirmed the presence of a powerful clan of the ‘Ndrangheta in Emilia Romagna: among those convicted of mafia association is Giuseppe Iaquinta (13 years in prison), father of the footballer Vincenzo, world champion in 2006, who in turn received a penalty discount (from 2 to 1 year) and a probation – the player was sentenced for possession of weapons. Nine years were inflicted on the Modenese businessman Augusto Bianchini, accused of having turned to the bosses for the management of the works after the 2012 earthquake. Other entrepreneurs such as Omar Costi (9 years and 8 months), Mirco Salsi (3 years) and Silvano Vecchi (2 years). Instead, Gino Gibertini was acquitted. A hard blow for the Vertinelli family, entrepreneurs first extorted from the ‘Ndrangheta and then criminals themselves: 17 years and 4 months in Palmo, 16 years and 4 months for their brother Giuseppe, 4 years each for their 3 children. Important phrases also for the Muto family: 12 years for Luigi, 10 years and 8 months for Antonio, 11 years and 4 months for a minor namesake, 8 years and 6 months for another Antonio. Increased punishment (from 5 to 9 years) for the collaborator of justice Salvatore Muto.

Pasquale Brescia, an entrepreneur who sent a threatening letter in 2016, will have to stay in prison for 13 years to the mayor of Reggio Emilia Luca Vecchi. The judgments issued yesterday, of which we have only reported a few examples, confirm the line of the Attorney General, represented in the courtroom by Lucia Musti, Luciana Cicerchia, Valter Giovannini and Beatrice Ronchi. The lawyers of the 93 convicted are now still the way of Cassation.
