BERLIN – Angela Merkel He again asked the Laenders, responsible for medical care, for a more severe blockade than the one currently in force in Germany to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. In a speech that’s already defined most emotional of his career, the Chancellor has appealed to the responsibility of the population, to minimize contacts, especially with a view to Christmas, otherwise the pandemic will get out of control again. In her speech in the Bundestag, Merkel invoked in her support the latest report by scientists from the Leopoldina Academy that defined the current measures as insufficient and immediately suggested greater restrictions throughout the federal territory at least until January 10. a fact that the infection curve does not show signs of significant flattening even in Germany, where in the last 24 hours almost 21,000 new cases have been registered, but above all the mortality rate has increased, with a new maximum of 590 deaths.
The Chancellor spoke in the general debate on the budget, a traditional opportunity to confront the highest level of federal politics, which yesterday was marked by strong criticism from the opposition. The harshest attack came from the nationalist far-right who called the government’s line against the pandemic grotesque and improvised. She locks up people and destroys entire sectors of the economy, said AfD leader Alice Weidel. Liberal leader Christian Lindner is more sober, accusing the Grosse Koalition of contradictory announcements and constant line changes, which make the rules unpredictable and difficult to follow. According to Lindner, the prohibitions on private gatherings are purely symbolic, have no consequences and limit personal freedoms.
Merkel’s response took everyone by surprise, especially because of the passion in her speech. I believe in the power of the Enlightenment – said the Chancellor in response to the progressive denial of the AfD – which Europe should be thankful for because it taught us that there are scientific truths, that they are real and to which we must adhere. And again: I studied physics in the RDA because I was sure that many things can be invalidated, but not the force of gravity, the speed of light or other irrefutable facts.
Merkel then goes directly to the citizens referring to Christmas, a German holiday by definition: I know how much, how much love there is when the Christmas markets open. Sorry, my heart really hurts. But if the price we have to pay is 590 deaths in one day, this is unacceptable to me and we must act. And if science tells us to reduce contact for a week during Christmas, then we should reflect and perhaps decide to start the holidays earlier, already on December 16. I just know that if we had too many contacts before Christmas and then it ends up being the last Christmas with our grandparents, something would be wrong.
For the Chancellor, who recognized the great stress to which German families are subjected, in the fight against Coronavirus the most important thing to be successful is the responsible behavior of each individual and the willingness to collaborate.
