Swabs from the Pugliese Ciaccio hospital in Catanzaro are converging in large numbers towards the Microbiology and Virology laboratory of all the provinces of Calabria. In the last two days, the operating unit has processed swabs sent by the provincial health company of Reggio Calabria, to which are added today those of the province of Cosenza. And the result is 43 new confirmed cases of contagion, but not only in the central area of Calabria.
The results of the swabs
The laboratory conducted tests on 183 swabs from the province of Reggio Calabria, 202 from the province of Cosenza and 947 from the central area of Calabria (660 from Catanzaro, 129 from Crotone and 158 from Vibo Valentia); in total, 1,332 swabs processed in the last 24 hours. The new positives were 43, distributed as follows: 9 in Catanzaro, 10 in Crotone, 2 in Vibo Valentia, 3 in Reggio Calabria and 19 in Cosenza.
The laboratory at full capacity
Already during the summer, senior management had begun a strict plan to increase the laboratory’s potential by requesting the Region for authorization to purchase new equipment that would have allowed the hospital to increase test reading capacity. In the middle of the first wave, the lab couldn’t process more than 350/400 per day. Thanks to the new instrumentation used today, it far exceeds 1,000 tests per day, offering support to other territories as well.
