Dawn of blood on Sunday on the A14 motorway, scene of an accident that killed two Milanese animal rights volunteers. The tragedy occurred at 5.30 in the morning between Pesaro and Cattolica, in the municipality of Gradara, heading north. There, for reasons still investigated, two trucks and the van of the “relays” that had left Foggia and were heading to Milan collided with some dogs and kittens on board.
The number of victims was very high: the two volunteers died, a third is in serious condition at the hospital and the drivers of the other two vehicles were injured. Among the victims is Elisabetta Barbieri, 63, of Apulian origin but a resident of Rho, who was among the volunteers who were in charge of transporting the dogs. The second victim, ST, 47, the man who was driving the van, is also a resident of the Milan area. A third relay runner is in the Cesena hospital in delicate condition. A German shepherd died instantly, while other puppies would have escaped and were later recovered. According to initial reconstructions, the volunteers’ vehicle was involved in a rear-end collision between the two trucks.

“The volunteers and zoophile guards from the Enpa de Pesaro immediately came to the place to help protect the animals. Immediately many volunteers came from all the animal welfare associations ”, said the national Enpa.
“The entire animal rights world is devastated by this enormous tragedy. The commitment of Elisabetta Barbieri and her staff has always been sincere, constant, putting animal welfare first. Too often we forget the fundamental role of people who, like Elisabetta, transport animals every day to take them hundreds of kilometers to give them the opportunity to start a new life ”, the farewell to Carla Rocchi, president of the association.
“Elisabetta and her staff have collaborated with Enpa on many occasions helping our sections. There are hundreds of animals that today live happily in their new families thanks to her. Your commitment has made a difference. We will miss you Elisabetta. Our Association I will always remember you with immense gratitude ”, his words.
According to reports from ENPA itself, a Spanish truck driver – “Jon Juaregi Transportes” – offered to take the dogs in the direction of Milan without asking for anything in return. “In these moments of extreme pain it is important to see how solidarity and empathy are able to erase all barriers – stressed Rocchi -. Thanks to all the people who are working in this difficult situation at this time ”.
