At least 75 people have been infected since COVID-19 – and 18 died – in a nursing home in Belgium after the visit of a man dressed in Santa Claus. Local health officials are sure the man was a “super-spreader” of the virus, with 61 residents and 14 staff members testing positive in the days following their visit. The visitor was reportedly one of the first to test positive immediately after appearing at the RSA Hemelrijck in Mol in an attempt to make its 169 residents smile in early December. «It was done with the best of intentions, but it all went wrong»The mayor of Mol, Wim Caeyers, told Belgian national broadcaster VRT. «It was a very black day for the nursing home.».

The mayor told local media: «Up to ten difficult days await us. It’s a lot of mental stress for the man who played Santa Claus, as well as the organizers and staff.». But the images circulating about the event showed that not all residents wore masks and that Santa and his helpers used to be very close to the elderly. Also for taking pictures. Mr. Caeyers said: «Initially the nursing home let us know that the rules had been followed, but soon after looking at the photos of the residents’ families, we realized that this was not the case.».

The municipal administration has defined the nursing home «a totally irresponsible organization». Yet the mayor said he would do anything «to keep the virus under control». A spokesperson for Armonea, the company that runs the house, said: «The team is a lot surprised by what happened».
