After a first half of the year filled with vintage events, investors will have a much-needed break on Friday as most of the US markets will be closed to observe on July 4th.
After the significant liquidation in March, the shares recovered some of their previous losses. The S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are down 3.1% and 9.5% so far this year, respectively. The Nasdaq Composite Index stands out, which has a lot of technology, and closed the highest Thursday of all time, with an annual gain of 13.8%.
That’s largely thanks to the strong second-quarter performance of the stock market, which ended earlier this week. The Dow had its best quarter since 1987 with a 17.7% gain, while the S&P 500 finished with 20% in the quarter, its best performance since 1998.
Meanwhile, many states are seeing an alarming rise in coronavirus infections, and as a result, are stopping plans to reopen.
The last time US exchanges closed for a holiday was more than a month ago for Memorial Day. Now, 244th Independence Day falls on Saturday, making Friday, July 4, 2020 a federal holiday.
Some merchants may have already been on vacation enjoying their own fireworks. The average daily trading volume on the New York Stock Exchange this week was 4.51 billion, 18% less than the annual average of 5.53 billion until last week.
Is the stock market open on July 4, 2020?
The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed today on Independence Day 2020. Some futures and options exchanges at CME Globex, including futures on stocks and commodities like crude oil and gold, will close early at 1pm. from the East, and agricultural products are closed for trade.
The Industry and Securities Markets Association also recommends that government bond markets and other fixed income securities close for the day.
Are international stock markets closed on Independence Day?
Because July 4th celebrates the day the United States declared independence from Britain, it is actually only observed in the United States. The London Stock Exchange and others in Europe are open today. Markets in Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, and Singapore are also open.
