When will Taoiseach Micheal Martin address the nation about the new coronavirus restrictions? All you need to know

Taoiseach Micheal Martin will address the nation tonight on new measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus in Ireland.

The leadership will follow a rejection by the Cabinet of a move to Level Five of the Living with Covid-19 plan, which the National Public Health Emergencies Team (NPHET) had recommended last night.

Instead, it is understood that the Government has proposed a move to Level Three across the country, moving 24 counties from Level Two and keeping Dublin and Donegal where they are.

However, there may be a closer focus on compliance and enforcement of the rules.

It comes amid an increase in coronavirus cases in recent weeks, with another 518 cases announced across the country today.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin is scheduled to speak to the Irish public at 9pm tonight about the new measures, which include closing pubs and restaurants that cannot serve outsiders.

However, it is understood that the leader of Fianna Fail will not answer questions on the matter.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar will also appear on RTE’s Claire Byrne Show at 9:35 PM tonight.

A move to Level Five would have returned the country to a lockdown similar to that in March, except that schools and nurseries would remain open.

But in the face of mounting economic pressure, the government has rejected this “nuclear” option.
