He trained at the Abbey School of Acting and throughout his career, which spanned more than 50 years, he appeared in numerous productions at the famous Dublin theater.
Rynagh, who was in her 60s, was highly respected on the Irish theater scene and was also known for her skills as a director and writer.
In a statement this morning, the Abbey Theater said: “We were deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our dear friend and colleague Rynagh O’Grady. We are thinking of her family and all those who loved her.
“Rynagh was trained at the Abbey School of Acting and first appeared on our stages in 1969. Notable productions include Donal O’Kelly’s Mamie Sighs in 1990 and more recently Deirdre Kinahan’s The Unmanageable Sisters.
Abbey Theater Director Graham McLaren took a moment to remember his great friend, whom he had the privilege of directing in 2018 and 2019, saying the following …
“Rynagh O Grady
“His grace
“His talent
“Your humor
“Your integrity
“Your patience
“I would sneak into the last row of the Abbey to watch her silence a hysterical audience with a glance, then lead them through a speech full of heart, humanity and justice
“Irish theater got a lot darker today.”
“We are honored to have Rynagh reading for the Abbey stage as part of Dear Ireland in August 2020. We will miss her so much. Rest in peace dear Rynagh.”
While her partner, Abbey Theater actor Bill Murphy, called her a “Trojan woman”.
He said: “I am so sorry to hear of the passing of our Trojan and friend, actor Rynagh O Grady. We worked together on equity and most recently we worked together, with Abbey Theater on Dear Ireland Continues and Abbey Calling. Thunderous ovations to you Rynagh. You left your mark. “
