The man shot Thursday night was mourning the death of his partner last week, we can reveal.

Paddy “Pappy” Lyons, who was shot up to five times, lived with her 10-year-old son and the boy’s mother.

But she died just days before Lyons, 40, was killed in Belclare Terrace, Ballymun, North Dublin, leaving the boy an orphan.

Yesterday, locals recounted their shock at the murder. A man named Dale said he “couldn’t believe it.”

Murder victim Patrick Lyons

He told the Irish Mirror: “All my group chats were jumping with people saying that there had been a shooting and then I found out it was around the corner from my house.

“I would have known that Paddy had seen him, but I really didn’t know him personally.

“It’s generally a pretty quiet area and you don’t really expect it. I couldn’t believe it when I heard it. “

Another added: “It’s terribly sad. Nobody deserves to go that way. You always saw him on the green with his young friend kicking a ball.

“Our thoughts are with his poor family.”

A bouquet of flowers left at the scene read: “Pappy, RIP. From the O’Rourke x family ”.

While Mr. Lyons was known to Gardai, he was known for petty crimes such as robbery, public order, and drug possession.

He was also an addict and his murder is believed to be related to this.

However, the victim is not believed to have been involved in gang activity nor is his murder believed to be gang related or a dispute.

Tributes have been pouring in online for the slain father, and friends fondly remember him.

One said, “RIP Pappy. Some fun memories with you in the past. “

Another added: “I can’t believe it, who would do that to Pappy? He was harmless. ”

And one said, “Great party sessions with him over the years, I always had time with Dad to chat.”

Fianna Fail Dublin TD Paul McAuliffe said that many communities are suffering at the hands of criminals.

He added: “While we don’t know the details or if it is drug-related, we do know that Ballymun, like many communities, is in the hands of the drug industry.”

Gardai has urged anyone with information or people who witnessed the attack to contact them.
