The Taoiseach has said that Ireland can make level three work if people follow the guidelines.
It comes after 1,012 new cases were confirmed Saturday night, the highest number since May and the second-highest daily increase in history.
And amid talks about another lockdown, Micheal Martin said this morning that level three can reduce the virus if people comply over the next few days and weeks.
The Taoiseach said: “At midnight last Tuesday, the Government moved the country to Level 3 of the Plan to Live with Covid-19. Level 3 implies a higher level of restrictions for individuals and society, particularly in our hotel sector. .
“It is accompanied by stricter enforcement measures.
“If we all change our behaviors and work together, we can make Level 3 work, protect lives and livelihoods, show that we can contain the virus and prevent its growth.
“The reopening of our schools has shown what can be done with collective effort and adherence to safety guidelines and sensible measures.
“As a result, the mental, educational, and physical well-being of our nation’s children has been protected and enhanced. Keeping our schools open remains a key government priority – ensuring that the life opportunities of our youth are not affected.
“An unprecedented level of resources has been allocated to health services, both in the Winter Plan and throughout 2021. This will allow them to cope with Covid-19 and will ensure a reformed and better health service for the future. .
“Covid-19 is a challenge for the countries of Europe and the world. The next few weeks will be a challenge, but working with NPHET, we will respond firmly and appropriately. We have the capacity and the resources to overcome this and we will.
“The essential steps remain the same. Reduce our social contacts, wash our hands, mask ourselves and behave as if you have the virus. Stay safe.”
