Met Eireann has extended an urgent snow advisory as more counties will be affected by up to 5 cm of falls in the next few hours.
The yellow status alert for snow and ice is now in effect for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan from 8am this morning until 6pm tomorrow.
Meteorological experts predict snow accumulations of between 2 and 5 cm in some places.
And it will stay insanely cold for the rest of the week with lows of -5 ° C sometimes overnight.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “This morning it will be very cold with patches of ice. Today will be stormy with scattered winter showers of sleet or snow that will give some accumulations in some places. There will be a mixture of clouds with some episodes of sunshine or brightness. Higher temperatures of just 1 to 3 degrees, with an added wind chill factor due to the cool, gusty winds from the east.
“It is bitter cold tonight with widespread strong to severe frost. Scattered winter showers will be confined primarily to the eastern half of the country as long, clear spells develop. And Thursday will see “dangerous” conditions as snow moves across the country, before temperatures plummet to -1 ° C.
While more snow could arrive for Ulster and North Leinster on Saturday, with lows of 0 ° C overnight.
One forecaster added: “Sleet and snow will spread slowly north from the southwest, with snow accumulations creating dangerous conditions. Higher temperatures 1 to 3 degrees. Chill feeling with fresh, gusty winds from the southeast, plus strong in western and southwestern counties.
“Staying windy overnight with sleet and snow continuing to fall over much of the east, center, and north, creating more accumulations. However, precipitation will turn to rain in parts of the south and west. Temperatures lower from -1 to +2 degrees with fresh winds from the southeast.
“Sleet and snow can linger for a while in the eastern half of the country on Friday, with bouts of rain elsewhere. It will get drier in the afternoon before it rains in the west at night.
“Southeastern breezes will strengthen during the day, becoming strong and gusty in coastal counties. Higher temperatures generally 1-4 degrees, however cooler in southwestern counties with highs of 5-8 degrees.
“Windy with outbreaks of rain on Saturday, possibly continuing to fall as sleet and snow in Ulster and north Leinster for a while. Winds from the southeast will be cool to strong and gusty.
