RTÉ presenter Mairead Ronan has said she is “devastated” after contracting Covid-19 this month.

The ‘Fittest Family in Ireland’ star believed she had some degree of immunity to the virus after her husband Louis and their two daughters Bonnie (2) and Eliza (4) tested positive last month.

Despite the initial negative test for the virus, both she and her son Dara (13) were later diagnosed with the disease.

She told the Irish Independent how she was totally puzzled about how she got it because they had been very careful during the level 5 restrictions, even receiving her purchases at her home.

She has only been to a few places in recent weeks, so she does not know how she contracted the virus.

He initially thought it was just the regular winter flu until his health worsened.

“They deliver everything to us and we don’t even go to the supermarket anymore,” he said.

“I got gas and they did an eye test, but that place was spotless. I wore gloves, a mask, and hand sanitizer and was the only customer for the entire appointment.”

While she said she was totally calm for about nine days and is now over the worst, her son Dara was “totally fine, thankfully.”

This afternoon he saw her explain to the listeners of her Today FM show how it had been how she initially thought that she and her young son had already gotten Covid back in 2019.

“In fact, we thought it was very possible that Dara and I had Covid before Covid existed because we were both sick in December 2019.

“Well we weren’t immune because both Dara and I caught Covid and we have no idea where we got it from.”

He went on to say that he had numerous symptoms of the virus and that he had a hard time in recent weeks.

“I’ve gotten over the worst, but it’s been tough,” he said.

“I had very high temperatures, I had earaches, a very bad sore throat and pain in my eyeballs. I can’t describe how bad the pain was in my eyeballs, they hurt a lot and the headaches were also really horrible and I won’t bore you with the details. “

She said they have been puzzled about how she got sick with Covid-19, given how limited her social interactions have been in recent months.

“Dara is in her room. She’s homeschooling through Zoom, she’s not playing any sports, she hasn’t seen a single friend before Christmas.

“I have worked inside the Today FM building for only five days in all of 2021 and now it is February 23. We don’t go to the supermarket anymore, we get everything. Where was it?

“I went to a gas station and they did an eye exam – they were the only two places I was in.”

She went on to say that despite taking all precautions, she and her family still couldn’t keep the virus away.

“So these are the only two places that I have been and yet Covid returned to my house. It’s incredibly frustrating and it was really horrible.

“Every time I see the commercials on television or hear them here, I get a little angry.

“You know the ones that say, ‘Put on the mask, wash your hands.’ I say, ‘I’m doing that.’

Mairead said everyone has been very careful when contracting the virus.

“As a family we’ve been very careful since this landed in Ireland last March and I thought, ‘There’s no way this is going to get into my house.’ But he did and he came into my house twice, so once it wasn’t good enough, he came back in.

“And to put things in context, we are two months away from Christmas and I still have my best friend Linda and her children’s Christmas presents wrapped up in the guest room.

“So now you know where I’ve been for the last week and a little bit and what I’ve been doing, absolutely nothing. I was home and sick.”
