All eyes are on Musselburgh and the third leg of a high-priced triplet wagered after the top two won to leave bookies facing potentially significant payouts.
The final leg of the triplet is Gallahers Cross coached by Daragh Bourke in the final obstacle handicap of 2m6f (4.25) at Musselburgh. The eight-year-old started 40-1 with some signatures, but is now 8-13 to earn a first win for his coach.
Blowing Dixie secured the second leg of a hugely priced triplet bet with total success in the 1 m 4 handicap at Southwell.
Trained and owned by Iain Jardine, Blowing Dixie was ejected from the 4-6 favorite having started 9-1 on Saturday.
That victory came after Fire Away claimed the first tranche of the bet in the first 2m4½f beginner handicap chase at Musselburgh.
Fire Away was a 22-1 overall when markets opened on Saturday, but soon dropped to 6-4 before being ejected from the favorite at Musselburgh.
BetVictor head of exchange Chris Poole said before competing: “We have made a lot of multiple bets on three horses, all at very high prices and at almost the same time last night.
“That is our worst nightmare because there is nothing we can do about these liabilities. We are stuck and we will lose a lot of money. I cannot go into numbers.”
Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield added: “It is fair to say that we have some responsibilities and they are not negligible.”
At the request of the BHA integrity department, the race day stewards interviewed the connections of the three runners prior to their respective races.
They were asked to provide information on the race selection, their expectations for Sunday, and the driving instructions given. Your comments were noted.
Colin Vickers, Musselburgh’s chief administrator, said: “At the request of the BHA integrity department due to unusual betting patterns, we interviewed all three coaches. [Laura Morgan, Iain Jardine and Daragh Bourke] and your comments will be sent to the BHA central office to assist with further investigation.
“We have also interviewed Richie McLernon [Fire Away’s jockey] and Alain Cawley [Gallahers Cross’s jockey]. “
In his first outing for coach Laura Morgan, having left Bourke earlier this month, the eight-year-old Fire Away forced by 19 lengths.
Morgan said: “We’ve only had the horse for 11 days, after buying it from Daragh Bourke. He had a couple of horses for sale and I bought it.
“I actually went to buy from the other guy, but we bought him instead. I definitely got a good buy and crossed my fingers, he will earn a few more.
“They told me there was a lot of money coming from Ireland, but to be honest I would have no idea. One of my shock horses got squashed here and it was full.”
McLernon said of Fire Away: “I rode it the last day at Kelso, which was quite a long time ago, and if it was the new ride or the track, I’m not really sure.
“He got a good opportunity here and he’s done well. I got a good advantage from Warren’s horse and he jumped up and kept going.
Last night I saw a great movement for the horses.
