Emmerdale will run out of episodes in late May if filming doesn’t start again, ITV chief Kevin Lygo said.
According to the head of the program, the accumulated soaps filmed before the coronavirus blockade will fill current schedules until the end of May.
Coronation Street has enough episodes to take them to the next month, but they are likely to run out in June.
Both soaps reduced their weekly episodes to three per week recently, in the midst of COVID-19, stopping all filming and television productions.
But if the comments are valid, this won’t stop the episodes to be finished later next month.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival 2020, Kevin confirmed that Emmerdale would run out of episodes in late May.
Meanwhile, Coronation Street would continue for the time being but would run out of episodes sometime in June.
From their comments, it’s also clear that soap bosses are already considering what steps to take to protect those most at risk.
Lygo revealed that the oldest cast members, including Ken Barlow actor William Roache, may be absent from filming.
There was no indication of how long this would last.
It comes after neighbors became the first soap to restart production amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Both Australian neighbors and fellow soap operas Home and Away are taking great steps to allow filming to continue.
Now, UK soaps are believed to be able to take notice and try to take similar precautions so that the cast and crew can re-shoot new episodes.
On This Morning, Cain Dingle actor Jeff Hordley explained the bosses’ plans when the country comes out of the lockdown.
Host Phillip Schofield asked, “Has there been talk about how you would return if you were to return?
“Because I think the neighbors started the other day, but I think they were being very socially aware while filming.”
“Has there been talk about how you would do it?”
Jeff said: “I think we would be following the model they did in Australia and this is how we would proceed if we returned. Definitely.”
Emmerdale airs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7 p.m. on ITV, while Coronation Street airs on the same days at 7:30 p.m.
