Irish Pubs Update: Big Reopening Blow As Latest Closure Plans Start To Emerge

Starting April 5, it appears that various lockdown restrictions in Ireland will be eased, but pubs are unlikely to return before mid-summer.

Government officials are currently discussing the measures that will take effect early next month as the current Level Five lockdown must be extended.

A 5 km boundary extension, outdoor gatherings and a gradual return to construction are understood to be top priorities.

However, sadly, it appears that the bars and restaurants will be closed until at least the middle of June, or possibly longer.

It is already accepted that the return of personal services, including beauty salons and indoor hospitality, will not be recommended by NPHET and will not be considered by the Cabinet.

A senior government source told the Irish Mirror when asked about the haircuts and haircuts: “I’m afraid they are off the table for now, until mid-summer actually.”

He added: “They are not in the running for next Tuesday’s announcement.”

And it is also almost certain that the reopening of personal services, such as hairdressing, and hospitality are firmly “off the table,” according to a senior government source.

The considerations on the table next week are now limited to the following five, in this order of priority:

  1. Raise the 5km travel limit

  2. Expand limited outdoor gathering

  3. Gradual reintroduction of construction

  4. Sports and training for children

  5. Non-contact outdoor sports for adults like golf and tennis

A cabinet minister explained to the Irish Mirror how the priorities will unfold.

He said the “best case scenario” is that all five will be announced as softened starting April 5 in Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s final state of the nation address next week.

However, if the case numbers do not improve, the priorities at the bottom of the list should be dropped.

He added: “take them in order, pulling them from the bottom if the numbers are not correct.”

The source said this means: “Golf is out if that happens, and other outdoor adult sports.”

Another government source said there is “great interest” that restrictions on children’s outdoor activities, number four on the list, are eased next Tuesday.
