Bone remains of a woman who was in her 70s have been found at a construction site in Midleton, Co Cork.

On January 5, construction workers found a human skull on the Midleton to Youghal Greenway, just off Shanty Path in Roxborough, and notified the Gardaí.

State pathologist Dr. Margaret Bolster examined the scene and completed an autopsy at Cork University Hospital.

The scene was also examined by a forensic anthropologist and Garda crime scene investigators, while an incident room was also established at the Midleton Garda station.

The area was investigated extensively over the next nine days and complete skeletal remains were found.

Forensic examinations suggest the remains are believed to be that of a woman, over 70 years old at the time of death, 5 to 5 feet 2 inches tall, who had a large frame, wore false teeth, and suffered from arthritis.

No DNA matches have been found, and a search of the missing persons records has also not identified any possible matches.

Gardaí has conducted house-to-house investigations in the local area and is asking the public to submit any information they may have.

“Someone in the community must know how the female skeletal remains came to be at this locally known ‘tipping point’ on the Shanty Path in Roxborough, Midleton, Co Cork,” read a statement from the Garda Press Office.

“A Garda Síochána is determined to formally identify the deceased and treat her with the respect and dignity she deserves.

“A Garda Síochána wants to give closure to a family that, in this initial stage, remains unknown and to ensure that the remains are taken to a final resting place.

“Anyone with information can contact the Gardaí investigator in the incident room at Midleton Garda station 021 – 4621550, the confidential Garda line at 1800 666 111 or at any Garda station.”
