Marian Finucane’s son Jack Clarke paid tribute to his loving mother ahead of a documentary about her that will air on RTÉ Monday night.
he documentary feature film ‘Marian’ is presented by her husband John Clarke, who provides an insight into the life of the legendary broadcaster and the extraordinary relationship they had in their 40 years together.
The film chronicles the couple’s relationship from the early days to the end, when Marian passed away suddenly in January last year.
Speaking to Liveline this afternoon, Jack reflected on the incredible relationship his parents had.
“They are very lucky in the sense that they met. They both loved to read and travel, they scratched each other’s intellectual curiosity.
“They had a great relationship and I’m very lucky to have seen that and been a part of it,” he said.
Jack also spoke of his devastation that his mother never got to know her daughter Sinéad, who was born a few weeks after her death.
“Sinead would have been my mother’s first grandchild and she really wanted to be a grandmother, so her passing just before Sinead was born was devastating for us.
“There is a lot of love in the family and really happy moments, but it is always in the back of our minds that someone is missing,” he said.
Reflecting on his childhood as the son of an RTÉ radio icon, Jack said: “You had RTÉ news in the kitchen and BBC news in another room and CNN in the TV room.
“We would sit and talk for hours about what was going on in the world and the politics of the day.”
Jack described his mother as a very private person who did a great job protecting her family from the spotlight.
“People across the country have great stories about how she played and helped people.
“It is a great privilege to have a mother who made such a positive impact on people,” he added.
Marian airs at 9:30 PM on RTÉ One tonight.
