A Facebook page promoting tourism in Doolin, Co Clare, apologized after posting an April Fools joke, which downplayed the suicide deaths at the nearby Cliffs of Moher.
In the post, which has since been removed, the Doolin – Visit Doolin page implied that the cliffs themselves would be lowered 200 meters for “health and safety.”
The post, which featured a picture of a person jumping into the water from high rocks, had a message saying that reducing the height would also lead to a reduction in the number of suicide deaths in the area.
The page received strong criticism, with many Facebook users calling the post “embarrassing” and “disturbing.”
One commenter wrote: “As a person with mental problems, I find this post very disturbing … I have a good sense of humor, but this is very, very hurtful to many people, family and relatives of suicide victims in particular … Embarrassing … “
Since then, the page has apologized “if anyone was offended” by what was written.
In a post, which is also no longer available on the Visit Doolin page, a moderator wrote: “Hello Fans. It seems that one of our members posted a post from April 1, albeit with humor, it may have offended some … If if anyone was offended, I will receive criticism. Niamh. “
Doolin Tourism, a local business cooperative, says it has no connection to the Visit Doolin page and “strongly condemns the impostor’s words and actions.”
They said, “Doolin Tourism … is the only official organization promoting Doolin as a destination.”
They have called for the permanent removal of the Visit Doolin page “as it is causing extreme stress to our community and now to the general public.”
