The Cabinet will consider today a proposal to extend the 5km limit from the middle of next month.

RTÉ News understands that under the recommendation to go to government, people could travel within counties starting in mid-April.

The recommendation is in line with the advice received last night by the Government’s National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The Cabinet is meeting this afternoon to identify what restrictions could be eased next month.

It is expected to adopt a plan that allows more outdoor activities for people from the second half of April.

This includes the likely return of children’s sports training, GAA county training for seniors along with tennis and golf at that time.

Construction workers building homes are also expected to return to work in the middle of the month.

The anticipated timing of these changes will follow or occur around the same time that all elementary and middle school students are due to return to the classroom on April 12.

Last night, the Minister of Transport said that the Government would follow a step-by-step approach in the coming weeks.

Eamon Ryan said it was essential to get it right in the coming weeks for the country to return to the normalcy that is now in the offing.

The minister spoke after a lengthy cabinet committee meeting last night where NPHET warned that any major easing of restrictions in the coming weeks would put the country in a dangerous position.
