A body has been found while searching for a missing father after a tragic kayak accident.

Declan Reid had been kayaking with his son next to his childhood home when the boat sank in the River Barrow at Ardreigh Lock in Athy, Co Kildare last Sunday.

The 34-year-old managed to catch up with his eight-year-old son and keep him afloat before drawing the attention of a passing teenager.

The young man dove into the water and rescued the boy and took him to the river bank where he was treated by paramedics.

But when the teenager returned for Mr. Reid, the father had disappeared.

An exhaustive search of the river has been carried out for several days, but has now stopped following the discovery of a body.

A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí in Athy have recovered the body of a man, in his 30s, this afternoon after a search operation in the Barrow River, Co. Kildare that began on February 28, 2021.

“At approximately 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Gardaí from the Sub-Aqua Unit recovered the body from the water.

“The body of the male remains at the scene and the local coroner has been notified.

“His body will be removed from the scene shortly and taken to the morgue in Naas for a post-mortem examination.”
