Met Eireann has issued a gloomy forecast for the next few days, as experts shared an update on the “Sahara dust” event hitting Ireland.
Charts from the Dust Forecast Center showed a column heading to Europe this week.
However, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said that the relatively dry conditions mean we have avoided the worst of the dust explosion.
He wrote on Twitter: “The lack of rain has meant we haven’t seen much Saharan dust coming to the surface, thankfully. The windows still look good.”
Meanwhile, we will see more spells of sunshine on Friday as conditions will remain “largely dry” in most areas.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “Today there will be a mixture of clouds and sunny periods. It will be mostly dry, except for a few isolated patches of light rain or drizzle, mainly in the coastal parts of Munster and Connacht. Highest temperatures 6 to 9 degrees with mild to moderate southeast winds, occasionally cooling along the Atlantic coasts.
“Most areas will be dry with clear periods tonight, but it will be more cloudy with some erratic showers or drizzles near the coasts in the south and west. It will be a cold night with lower temperatures ranging from -3 to + 2 degrees, the coldest in the north and east, where some frosts will develop, with mild to moderate southeast winds.
“Saturday will start cold and dry, with periods of sunshine in many areas, but clouds will increase during the day and erratic rain will move towards the western and northwestern coastal parts. A cool day with maximum temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees, with light to moderate breezes from the south.
“Saturday night will be mostly dry with a mixture of clouds and clear spells, although there can sometimes be some erratic drizzle in the western and northwestern coastal parts. Minimum temperatures will range from -2 to +4 degrees, the most cold north and east where some frosts will develop Light to moderate southerly winds continue.
“Sunday will be generally cloudy and dry, but light rain and drizzle will continue to affect the western and northwestern coastal parts. Higher temperatures 7-10 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds.”
And the next week will see more unstable conditions with heavy rain at times and freezing temperatures overnight.
A meteorologist added: “The rain will spread to all areas on Monday and will be heavy at times in the west. Afternoon temperatures will reach 7 to 10 degrees and the winds will be mostly moderate, veering south toward the west later.
“The rain will gradually clear from the east and south on Monday night and will be followed by clear gusts and isolated showers, mainly in the northwest. Some frost will form as temperatures drop between -1 and +2 degrees. and cool southerly winds will develop on the western shores by morning.
