A video has emerged of a friendly dolphin performing in front of a small audience in Galway Bay, leading many to wonder if it could be Fungie.
In the video captured by Steve Sweeney, a small boat floats on the water when all of a sudden a lone dolphin launches itself about 12 feet into the air.
While the dolphin is unlikely to be the much-loved Fungie, speculation has continued on social media that the famous Dingle native has ‘risen’ from the dead.
One user on social media said: “This is a lot like mushrooms … can we tag the relevant people to confirm if it’s our no?
While another commented: “He looks a little younger / more active. What a beauty. I miss Fungie, although I’m sure after so many decades he also deserved his rest / retirement which he had earned well if he needed to go find one. final”. peace. I love dolphins. “
It would also align with the “ray of hope” that a leading dolphin expert offered the people of Dingle in November.
Dr Simon Berrow, a professor at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and a fellow at the institute’s Center for Marine and Freshwater Research, said there have been cases in recent times where presumed dead Irish dolphins have turned up in two Kerry Bays.
Dr Berrow, who has been studying bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon Estuary for nearly 30 years, said he and his team recently discovered that dolphins that they thought were dead had moved to Brandon and Tralee Bay.
The Dingle legend has been missing since the beginning of November with few concrete answers since its disappearance.
