An appeal has been issued for the public to help identify skeletal remains found by workers involved in earthwork on the former Midleton to Youghal railway line in Co Cork.

The remains were found on January 5. Gardaí says they are those of a woman and have not been linked to any known missing person case or any ongoing investigation.

The discovery of a skull by workers clearing a greenway path along the old Midleton to Youghal railway line led to a search for garda that lasted more than nine days.

The workers were clearing brush from the railroad, which closed in 1982. They alerted Gardaí when a man found the skull on the afternoon of January 5 with an excavator to level the ground in an area known as Sendero de Chabolas, 3 km away. To the East. of Midleton.

The Gardaí sealed off the area until the deputy state pathologist, Dr. Margot Bolster, and the senior gardaí visited her the next morning.

A detailed search was then started and more parts of the body were found and they were taken to Cork University Hospital, where they were examined by Dr Bolster.

Gardaí also received assistance from a forensic anthropologist.

At the end of the garda search, a complete skeleton had been recovered. Some personal items and clothing fragments were also found, which appear to be from a nightdress.

Gardaí says the remains are those of a woman, over 70 years old. The woman is described as being between 5 ‘(1.52m) and 5’2 “(1.57m) tall.

The samples taken from the skeletal remains were sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis and testing. The Gardaí had hoped that a DNA profile could be constructed and compared with a profile from the Garda missing persons database.

However, this morning Gadaí’s investigation confirmed that no match had yet been established with any known missing person, or with any other Garda investigation currently underway.

They are asking people with information to contact them at the Midleton Garda station in Co Cork, where an incident room has been set up.
