A DOCTOR who accused Nphet of spreading “fear” around the coronavirus has been removed from his post as chairman of the after-hours GP, Shannondoc.
r Pat Morrissey sparked controversy after speaking at a rally in Dublin last weekend where he criticized “scary propaganda.”
A Shannondoc spokesperson said: “Shannondoc can confirm that Dr. Pat Morrissey is no longer its chairman or board member.
“As a front-line healthcare service provider, Shannondoc fully supports and follows public health guidelines.
“Shannondoc has implemented best practice procedures and protocols to protect both patients and our staff from coronavirus.
“We want to assure our patients that we will continue to uphold and implement these practices and the directives issued by public health authorities.
“These directives have provided and continue to provide the best protective environment for both patients and medical personnel.
“We wish to thank Dr. Morrissey for his important contribution to the development of the cooperative during his tenure. We will embark on the process of appointing Dr. Morrissey’s successor with immediate effect. ”
In a video that circulated on social media, Dr. Morrissey told protesters that Covid-19 was “for many, a mild disease,” although he also acknowledged that “for some I accept that it can be quite serious.
“Defying HSE guidelines, I used hydroxychloroquine, zinc, azithromycin, and readily available vitamin D, in combination, (in) high-risk patients who became ill with Covid in my patient population,” Dr. Morrisey said at the rally.
Dr. Morrissey cited a 2005 study that he claimed showed the drug hydroxychloroquine to be “very effective against the first SARS virus.”
US President Donald Trump, who self-isolated himself in the White House after a period in the hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, has also promoted the use of hydroxychloroquine in treating Covid patients.
In response to Dr. Morrisey’s comments about treating his patients who tested positive for Covid-19 with hydroxychloroquine, an HSE spokeswoman said: “Hydroxychloroquine is not used as a treatment for Covid-19.
“It has been removed from clinical recommendations due to evidence indicating a lack of benefit in hospitalized patients with Covid-19.
“The most important action we can take is to protect ourselves and others from Covid-19. You can do this by washing your hands regularly, practicing good respiratory hygiene, keeping two meters between you and other people, avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth and wearing a mask where indicated in closed public spaces ”.
Dr Morrissey added: “The daily case numbers should stop being pressured by the media in our face, in a people who are suffering more from Covid fatigue than Covid itself.
“The confinements must end. People miss the camaraderie of sports, arts, and music. It is time to cease to exist and start living again ”.
“Ireland, under Nphet’s terrorist propaganda, is getting sicker every day,” he added.
On the other hand, in an interview with the Limerick Leader, Dr Morrisey stated that Ireland is “practically at herd immunity level now”.
“People die every day, I was at the bedside of a patient who died yesterday, I see death all the time,” he said.
Dr. Morrisey said that, in his opinion, the public currently has a “death phobia.”
“Death is part of life, and the government and Nphet are using people’s fear of death, their irrational fear of death, like a hammer to hit them.”
In response to his removal as Chairman and CEO of Shannondoc, he said: “I think it is a sad indictment against a country we live in, and the time we live in, that things are so polarized and there is no room for freedom expression, and that I would be penalized for that.
“But I respect the integrity of the board and they have made a judgment,” he added.
Dr. Morrisey could not be reached for comment this afternoon, but a message was left at his clinic for a response.
