Covid-19 restrictions must be extended

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet again today and is expected to recommend that the current movement restrictions introduced nearly fifteen days ago to help contain the spread of Covid-19 be extended.

The strict limits for leaving home and traveling to workplaces were originally set to last until Easter Sunday.

The meeting comes after an update on progress made in slowing the spread of Covid-19 from the head of the Team Modeling Advisory Group, Professor Philip Nolan.

Forty days after the national epidemic and the word of Professor Nolan, who chairs the large group of mathematicians who model the course of the disease, is mixed.

Yes, the impact of the highly disruptive restrictions adopted by the public has been profound, but no, we are not there yet: the rate of spread of the virus has dropped by three-quarters, but needs to be further reduced.

For that, Professor Nolan of the University of Maynooth said, it would take very strong social distancing measures over a very long period of time.

The National Public Health Emergency Team will consider what that means to them when they meet today.

The restrictions on work and travel that originally expire after Easter will be extended, but will also consider what additional measures may be necessary.

According to mathematicians, Ireland was originally heading for a peak of 100,000 Covid-19 infections per day.

Now, thanks to the actions of all citizens, confirmed infections are running at just 500 a day.

A huge number of illnesses and deaths have been avoided so far.
