Apple may delay launch of iPhone 12 Pro due to supply chain issues with 120Hz display, or if face cancels the feature completely, according to display analyst Ross Young and leaker Jon Prosser.
Young explained via a Tweet that Apple has problems with supply chain with getting 120Hz display driver ICs for the siPhone 12 Pro, even though it may get the right 120Hz panels. Apple would therefore have to delay the iPhone 12 Pro launch to wait for the correct drivers IC, or send the iPhone 12 Pro without 120Hz display. To avoid this delay, Young expects Apple to opt for standard 60Hz displays on the PiPhone 12 Pro.
Heard that Apple can get 120Hz Pro panels, but not 120Hz driver ICs. That they will or should come up with a fix that will be tricky, wait for 120Hz driver ICs and the launch may be significantly delayed than with 60Hz launch. We hear that they will start with 60Hz. Young speculates that the late-stage display issues for the 12iPhone 12 facing Pro could be explained by 120Hz not being part of the original plans for the device. However, he suggests the possibility that Apple will delay the launchiPhone 12 Pro launch date until the 120Hz display is ready to ship. It is unclear how long such a delay could be. In July, Apple confirmed that it expects to release this year’s iPhones later than usual.
The case is “not a simple problem in this case,” Young sei. “Apple can move mountains, that will look like that. Given how badly some of you want 120Hz, maybe they’s listening to the launch delay until 120Hz is ready.” Young’s analysis was largely confirmed today by leaker Jon Prosser, who agrees with reports about Apple continuing ongoing internal debate over the status of the PiPhone 12 Pro’s 120Hz display.
“Behind the scenes, Apple is still testing 120Hz, ProMotion, for iPhone 12 Pro. Specifically, at least, in this case with my sources, the 12 Pro Max,” Prosser said via a video on today’s Front Page Tech. “120Hz works fine, with a manual switch in settings on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.”
ProMotion technology on the PiPad Pro can dynamically adjust the display to the movement of content, leading to smoother scrolling, smoother movement and improved responsiveness. The frame rate changes based on the content on the screen, and saves battery life. Processes encouraged his followers, “do not give up at 120Hz on 12 Pro yet …”
Reports surrounding a potential 120Hz display have been extremely mixed, with some leakers such as “Ice Universe” and Max Weinbach suggesting that the feature is set to come with the iPhone 12 Pro. Prosser has previously also discussed the possibility of iPhone 12 Pro models with sporty ProMotion displays.
In July, Young reported that none of his contacts managed to support rumors that the iPhone 12 Pro models will have 120Hz displays, with his sources instead indicating that 120Hz technology will come in the 2021 iPhone update. Young has instead suggested that Apple will implement ProMotion in 2021 in addition to adopting low-power LTPO monitors, allowing a variable refresh rate to allow battery life.
It’s unusual that Apple at such a late stage is uncertain with key features, with launch expected next month. If 120Hz display is not an integral design feature of the PiPhone 12 Pro, it would probably be easier to roll back plans to incorporate the feature on devices this fall.
The uncertainty regarding the refresh rate of the iPhone 12 Pro display means that it’s extremely difficult to say how things might unfold, but these reports raise serious doubts about the possibility of a 120Hz display on the iPhone 12 this year. Pro is coming to market. At the very least, it looks like Apple is having a hard time shipping the feature with the iPhone 12 Pro.
