iOS 14: practical with the first CarPlay wallpapers

Apple CarPlay improves every year with iPhone software updates. This year is no different with iOS 14 and new features like wallpaper support.

Here’s how to set up a CarPlay wallpaper in iOS 14:

  • Launch the setup app in CarPlay (not iPhone)
  • Select the wallpaper section
  • Touch a wallpaper to preview, then confirm your selection

That’s. Many wallpapers have dark and light modes that change according to the appearance of CarPlay.

Dark mode is always turned on by default in CarPlay, and you can optionally turn automatic appearance on as an option in the Settings app.

CarPlay’s wallpapers and appearance settings are independent of the backgrounds and modes you use on iPhone.

Apple introduced the light mode option for CarPlay in iOS 13. This mode changed the default wallpaper from black to white for the first time since iOS 8 added CarPlay in 2014.

CarPlay wallpapers in iOS 14 beta 1 include a black option for light and dark mode, a black / white option like iOS 13 introduced, or one of five default wallpapers that react to light and dark mode.

You can’t set a custom wallpaper as the background in CarPlay, but the change makes Apple’s infotainment system more customizable than the standard entertainment system interfaces.
