JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – One of the pioneers of the Jamaah Islamiyah terrorist group, Aris Sumarsono or Zulkarnaen, spoke about his work in proposing terrorists and acts of terrorism in various regions of Indonesia in the period of the 2000s.
A series of acts of terrorism led by Zulkarnaen began when he formed a team with a small structure.
This team works to recruit members in various areas who then receive special training.

The success of this small team in proposing a series of would-be terrorists later heralded the birth of Jamaah Islamiyah, a terrorist group considered affiliated with Al Qaeda, the global terrorist organization.
“I told you, there is an assignment for the Khos team. Where, this is an acceleration fortadrib (training) to the members, it will also be provided if a sudden time is needed, someone is ordered and can be used, “Zulkarnaen was quoted as saying by Antara. Compass TV, Monday (12/21/2020).
In forming this small team, Zulkarnaen recruited several would-be terrorists who were scattered throughout Java.
In this initial agenda, Zulkarnaen managed to come up with several names, Syawad, Sahjio and Umar de Solo.

Then Ilyah from Kudus, Abdul Mati from Pemalang, Nuaim from Jakarta and Banjarkasi Usman.
Also, Ali Imron, Mubarok, Amrozi and Usman, who came from East Java.
From this recruitment, Zulkarnaen divided the roles and duties of the members that he successfully applied for.
Zulkarnaen successfully planted the system at the beginning of the movement by quickly forming small groups.
This group later became a very problematic specter for the security forces due to their acts of terror.
“The East Javanese part looks for jihandak and stores it, Central Java trains it, those in Jakarta are studying intelligence, meanwhile,” Zulkarnaen said.

Following the successful formation of this group, Zulkarnaen moved to various regions of Indonesia, from Jakarta, Ambon, to Poso.
In his acts of terror, Zulkarnaen was involved in the church bombings in Ambon, Mojokerto, the Bali bombings, the Philippine Embassy and Poso.
In this terror, the security apparatus detected the participation of Zulkarnaen as an actor behind the series of attacks. So Zulkarnaen became the most wanted person.

Jamaah Islamiyah’s existence faded after the government declared this group a banned organization.
In 2007, Jamaah Islamiyah was dissolved by decision of the South Jakarta District Court.
This dissolution did not necessarily bring about the total collapse of Jamaah Islamiyah. Evidently, in 2019, Special Police Detachment 88 (Densus) 88 managed to secure five members of Jamaah Islamiyah.
This arrest is a sign that Jamaah Islamiyah still exists.
A year later, on Monday (12/14/2020), Densus 88 arrested Zulkarnaen in Lamongan, East Java.
