Xi Jinping slams real estate mogul 18 years in prison

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Proverbs your mouth, your tiger It fits the plight of Ren Zhiqiang, a former real estate mogul who was sentenced to 18 years in prison on corruption charges after openly criticizing Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to the state media report Global Times, cited by BBC International, a court in Beijing found Zhiqiang “guilty of corruption, bribery and embezzlement of public funds.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Zhiqiang also had to pay a fine of 4.2 million yuan or the equivalent of 9.1 billion rupees (assuming 2,176 rupees / yuan).

Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court said Zhiqiang had accepted bribes worth 1.25 million yuan and embezzled nearly 50 million yuan. Zhiqiang has also voluntarily admitted all the allegations and will not appeal the decision.

Zhiqiang, former president of Hua Yuan real estate company, is not just a business tycoon. He is the son of a ministry official and is known to have close ties to senior party leaders, making his criticisms easier to hear.

Before being sentenced, Zhiqiang disappeared in March 2020, shortly after he wrote an essay criticizing the Xi government. Although he does not directly mention Xi’s name, Zhiqiang’s essay is believed to speak about the president.

Despite the accusations against Zhiqiang, human rights groups have consistently accused the Xi government of using corruption charges as a way to suppress dissent.

Zhiqiang’s own essay looks at Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, and it comes after Xi’s televised speech.

“I am also curiously and deeply studying the speech [itu] … what I see … [adalah] not the Emperor standing there showing off his ‘new clothes’, but a clown who stripped down and insisted on remaining emperor, “said Zhiqiang’s essay, which was reported by the Digital Times.

Shortly after the trial was published, it was announced that Zhiqiang was under investigation for “alleged serious disciplinary infractions.” Beijing later announced that he had been expelled from the Communist Party.
