Working from home, NASA’s Mars Curiosity team makes major adjustments

CALIFORNIA, iNews.id – NASA continues to manage the Mars Curiosity rover mission. Unlike usual, this time they manage the Mars Explorer robot mission from home.

The coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) forced several people to work from home. In March 2020, NASA said no one was present at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) due to social distance efforts.

According to NASA, the team had already started planning for weeks before working remotely. The United States space agency explains that several important adjustments are needed as part of this transition, including the need to accommodate weak hardware.

NASA said the new programming for the Curiosity command generally involves many people gathered in one room. But, now this task must be done through video chat and messaging applications. As a result, fewer orders can be sent to the mobile per day.

“This is a classic, NASA textbook. We are facing a problem and we are looking for ways to make things work,” Chief Scientific Operations Team Carrie Bridge was quoted by Slash Gears on Wednesday (25 / 4/2020).

Some tasks require unique solutions. For example, the Curiosity team has replaced the special 3D glasses with old-school red-cyan 3D. This, NASA said, is the least powerful computer available to teams when they work at home.
