Whoops! Amid Corona again ‘exploding’, workers want to demonstrate again

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Hundreds of workers who are members of the Confederation of Indonesian Workers’ Unions (KSPI) will hold a demonstration at the Constitutional Court tomorrow Tuesday, December 29, 2020.

In addition to Jakarta, the action will also take place in 18 other areas, including Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Lampung, Batam, Gorontalo, etc. However, this rally took place amid the ‘explosion’ of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia, which has yet to show signs of abating.

“Each place of action was only followed by hundreds of people, through the implementation of fiscal distancing,” KSPI President Said Iqbal said on Monday (12/28).

This labor action entails two demands. First, the Omnibus Law Number 11 of 2020 on job creation is annulled and, second, the district / city sector minimum wage (UMSK) is increased in 2021.

In connection with the judicial review before the Constitutional Court, KSPI has filed a request for a formal and material review. For judicial review, the lawsuit material covers 12 topics, including: minimum wage, severance pay, fixed-time labor agreements (PKWTT), subcontracting of workers, working hours, leave of absence, layoffs, removal of criminal penalties, workers foreigners, social security and executor of labor placement.

“Meanwhile, for the formal test, we ask that the omnibus law of the Employment Creation Law be canceled completely because the drafting process contained formal defects and many irregularities,” Said Iqbal said.

“We ask the Constitutional Court judge to be diligent in examining this matter and to decide the matter fairly. If the workers feel that their justice has been violated, then the Indonesian workers will take massive action,” he continued.

In addition to rejecting the UU Cipta Kerja omnibus law, in their action, the workers also demanded that the UMSK in 2021 continue to rise.

According to Said Iqbal, if the UMSK 2021 does not increase, it will reduce purchasing power and lower minimum wages in certain sectors that workers receive. Additionally, UMSK applies to certain types of industries that are considered to have the ability to pay labor wages better than most other industries.
