JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Two presidential candidates in the United States (US), Donald Trump and Joe Biden, claim victory in the 2020 US presidential election.

Not only that, Donald Trump even threatened to sue the Supreme Court if he lost to Joe Biden, because he felt cheated.
This condition has received great attention on social media from the public, academics, political activists and journalists due to its similarity to conditions in Indonesia.

David Lipson himself has had experience as a journalist covering Indonesia in 2018-2019. He also covered the 2019 presidential elections, in which Joko Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno participated.
Ross Tapsell responded to David Lipson’s tweet. Ross is a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University (ANU) School of Culture, History and Language.

In his tweet, Tapsell hinted that conditions would not be exactly the same as in Indonesia if the losing candidate did not enter the winning candidate’s cabinet.
“Absolutely. But it is not a truly Indonesian policy unless Trump ends up as Biden’s defense secretary,” he added. Ross wrote.
What Ross wrote refers to Prabowo Subianto as a presidential candidate who lost the election and eventually entered the cabinet of Joko Widodo who won the 2019 election.
Both tweets received a wide response from netizens in Indonesia. There are those who agree, but many also respond with humorous statements.

Several similarities
Seeing this condition, a political observer from Indonesia’s Al Azhar University, Ujang Komaruddin, argued that the conditions for the US presidential elections with the 2019 Indonesian presidential elections had similarities.
First, the two candidates were in full competition.
“The competition was total. Down to the last drop of blood. So (at that time) Prabowo claimed victory. Even though he lost. This looks similar in the United States today,” Ujang said when contacted. Kompas.com, Thursday (05/11/2020).

Furthermore, the polarization that occurred in the United States, according to Ujang, was the same as in Indonesia last year.
He considered that it is probably because the two countries adhere to a democratic system.
“And democracy in Indonesia is very much about the US.

The Trump campaign team is challenging vote counting in key states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan.
Reporting from BBC, Biden wins at Michigan. Meanwhile, several US media also estimate that Biden won Wisconsin.
On the other hand, no results have yet been obtained in Pennsylvania.
If Biden won all three major states, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, the situation would land him in the White House.
