Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) allegedly gave a bouquet of flowers to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This was reported by North Korean state media, KCNA.
“Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un received a basket of flowers from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, in the framework of the 72nd anniversary of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea),” the outlet wrote, quoted on Thursday (9/24/2020).
The wreath was presented by the Indonesian ambassador to North Korea on September 22. North Korea itself celebrated independence day on September 9.
Jokowi’s message was received directly by Kim Jong Un. Jokowi also said that he will strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
“Allow me to convey my sincere congratulations to His Majesty and the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” Jokowi wrote.
“I believe that the spirit of the founding day will strengthen the efforts of the DPRK government and people to overcome the challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.”
“On this occasion I also want to reaffirm my commitment to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Korea DPR for the common interests of the two countries, as well as for peace and progress in the region and beyond.”
Indonesia and North Korea are known to have established diplomatic relations since the leadership of Indonesia’s first president, Ir. Soekarno. At the time, Sukarno was said to be close friends with the founder and first leader of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, who was the grandfather of Kim Jong-un.
Since the 1960s, Indonesia has had an embassy in Pyongyang, while North Korea has an embassy in Jakarta. Both countries are members of the Non-Aligned Movement.
