BAKUAzerbaijan claiming not to need mercenaries and to have sufficient personnel, and reservists in their conflict against Armenia. This was expressed by Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilkham Aliyev.

Hajiyev’s comments came shortly after the Russian Foreign Ministry raised concerns about the use of mercenaries in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. (See Graphic: Azerbaijani Kamikaze Drone “IAI Harpy” Destroys Armenia’s MBT T-72)

“We do not need personnel or mercenaries from other countries. Azerbaijan maintains its sovereign territory. Azerbaijan’s territory is under Armenian occupation,” Hajiyev said, Al Arabiya reported on Thursday (01/10/2020).

Regarding the Russian statement, Hajiyev said that Moscow only expressed concern and never accused Baku of using mercenaries in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. (Also read: War with Azerbaijan, Armenia admits that it does not need foreign aid)

“I want to correct, the Russian Foreign Ministry did not accuse Azerbaijan. The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its general concern about the deployment of some terrorists in the Nagorno-Karabakh region,” he said.

“I also share Azerbaijan’s concern about the events discussed in Azerbaijan, namely that the Armenian side has deployed mercenaries and terrorists from Middle Eastern countries in the Nagorno-Karabakh region to fight against Azerbaijan,” he said.
