Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Conditions intensified again in the South China Sea (LCS). The entry of US carriers into the region drew strong criticism from China.
China’s Foreign Ministry says that the US military frequently sending ships and planes into the waters of the South China Sea (LCS) is not good for peace. This was revealed after the US carrier group sailed into the waters of LCS.
The US carrier group, led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt and accompanied by three warships, entered the waterway on Saturday (1/23/2021) to promote the “freedom of the sea.” This was done a few days after the president of the United States, Joe Biden, took office.
“The United States often sends planes and ships to the SCS to exercise their muscles,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday (1/25/2021). “This is not conducive to peace and stability in the region.”
The LCS is a strategic location and turns into water worth trillions of dollars in trade each year. This location has long been the focus of contention between Beijing and Washington, with China furious over US military activity there.
China has repeatedly complained that US Navy ships approach the islands it occupies in LCS, where Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan also have similar claims.
Recently, China passed new rules. The Coast Guard is authorized to use “all necessary means” to stop or prevent threats from foreign ships at sea claimed by China.
On the other hand, the carrier group entered the SCS at the same time that Taiwan reported an attack by Chinese air force planes in the southwestern part of its air defense identification zone, raising concern in Washington.
China has not commented on what its air force is doing and Zhao referred the question to the Defense Ministry. He reiterated China’s position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and the United States should adhere to the “one China” principle.
Like most countries, the United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but it is an international supporter and a major supplier of arms to the island’s top democracy, angering China.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited a radar base in the north of the island on Monday, praising its ability to track Chinese troops.
“From last year until now, our radar station has detected nearly 2,000 Communist aircraft and more than 400 Communist ships, allowing us to quickly monitor and repel them, and fully protect the sea and airspace,” he told officials.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry added that only one Chinese plane flew into its defense zone on Monday, a Y-8 anti-submarine plane.
