TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, was the center of attention during the plenary session ratifying the Employment Creation Law, on Monday, October 5, 2020. The action allegedly turned off the microphone when a politician of the Democratic Party, Irwan or Irwan Fecho, was caught on camera by a television channel and went viral.

His name also became a trending topic on Twitter along with #DPRPenghianat. The video shows Puan and the vice president of the DPR, Azis Syamsuddin, having a brief discussion while the Democratic politician speaks. “Eliminating the rights of little people. If you want to be respected, please ha …” Irwan hadn’t had time to finish his sentence when Puan turned off the microphone.

At that moment, Puan’s hand seemed to move and seemed to be pressing a button. At the same time, Irwan’s voice was lost.

Puan’s action was criticized by senior Democratic Party officials Andi Arief. “Members of the Democratic Faction were speaking, suddenly the microphone went off. In the past, we just cried, we gave it to you with respect. Miss Marahani,” he tweeted on Tuesday, October 6, 2020.

In yesterday’s plenary session, members of the Democratic Party faction made several interruptions. From Benny Kabur Harman, Didi Irawadi Syamsuddin, to Irwan. Azis, as chairman of the trial, also gave them the opportunity to speak.

The Democrat’s disruption began when Benny asked the session chair to allow his factions to broadcast their views on the Job Creation Bill. The session heated up as Benny and Azis argued amongst themselves. The climax was that all members of the Democratic Party faction withdrew.

“Leadership, if we are not given the opportunity, we will choose to come out of leadership,” said Democratic faction member Benny Kabur Harman during the last plenary meeting. Previously, Azis Syamsuddin, who presided over the trial, felt that he had given enough opportunities to speak with Democrats. Azis repeatedly turned off the microphone of the Democrats who were speaking. He also threatened to ask Benny Harman to be kicked out of the courtroom for continuing to speak as he rose from his chair.

The Democratic Party disagrees if the Job Creation Act is passed. They share the same attitude with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). However, they both continued to follow the discussion process from the beginning in the Legislature Body of DPR RI.
