Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Marijuana is now removed from the list of illegal and dangerous drugs. The United Nations (UN) approved the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) and ratified it for medical purposes.
Reporting from New York TimesThis is in accordance with the results of the vote conducted by the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), which has 53 member countries. In which 27 European and American countries agreed while another 25, including China, Pakistan and Russia, opposed.
This decision comes as a surprise after 59 years of cannabis being juxtaposed with opium as a ‘haram’ item. This decision is expected to encourage further scientific research.
However, analysts say that this decision does not necessarily legalize marijuana in many countries. It depends on each jurisdiction.
“Things like this don’t mean that legalization will happen around the world,” Jessica Steinberg, CEO of marijuana consultancy Global C, was quoted as saying Thursday.
“(However), this could be a watershed moment.”
Currently, only a few countries legalize marijuana for medical and recreational purposes. The Netherlands, for example, allows the widespread use of marijuana for recreational purposes and it is sold openly in a place called a “cafeteria.”
