Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Won the United States (USA) presidential election. Joe Biden managed to defeat Donald Trump, the incumbent.
Several countries have also congratulated Biden. The US ‘enemy’ in the Middle East during the Trump administration, Iran, is no exception.
On his Twitter page on Monday (9/11/2020), Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif delivered a message to the United States. He said that even though Trump would disappear in 70 days, his country would be there forever.
That is why your country wants to ask for dialogue with the United States. This, he said on his account @JZarif, is important to resolve differences.
“A heartfelt message for our neighbors. Trump will be leaving in 70 days. But we will be here forever,” he wrote as seen. CNBC Indonesia.
“Betting on outsiders to provide security is not a good bet. We extended our hands to our neighbors so that dialogue can resolve differences.”
“Only together can we build a better future for everyone.”
Former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also stressed that the new US government must seize its opportunity to make up for the mistakes of the previous leader. He called Trump’s policies damaging.
“Trump’s destructive policies meet resistance … from the American people. The next American administration must seize the opportunity to mend the past … Iran supports constructive interactions with the world,” Rouhani said.
The United States under Trump has exacerbated relations between the two countries. Trump has imposed many sanctions on Iran since he withdrew from the joint nuclear deal, which was signed during the Barack Obama administration, in 2018.
Trump also recently implemented sanctions under United Nations resolutions. The sanctions were applied to 27 individuals and entities, including the Iranian Ministry of Defense and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.
Sanctions were imposed against Iran because Trump said the country had committed abuses, including carrying out attacks on Saudi oil facilities. On that basis, Trump also called on the countries of the world to support the extension of the arms embargo to Iran that will end next month.
The sanctions themselves have devastated Iran’s economy. The country was in recession from the fourth quarter (Q4) 2018 to the end of 2019. When it was about to rise in 2020, the country’s economy turned negative again. Despite the fact that in the first quarter of 2020 the economy was positive by 1.7%, in the second quarter of 2020 the economy was minus 6.4%.
