Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The meeting of the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investments (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan with the Advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister, Izumi Hiroto, has produced good results. Japan welcomed and promised to participate in the ‘RI endowment fund’, namely the Indonesian Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF) or the Nusantara Investment Authority (NIA).
At a meeting at the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday (03/12/2020), Luhut was accompanied by BUMN Minister Erick Thohir and Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Heri Akhmadi. Meanwhile, Hiroto was accompanied by the Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Maeda Tadashi, and the Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia, Kanasugi Kenji.
“My goal and Minister Erick to Tokyo is to invite Japan to increase investment through the SWF institution that will be formed based on the mandate of the Omnibus Law,” Luhut said in a statement received by CNBC Indonesia on Friday (12 / 4/2020).
“NIA will provide flexibility for investors to invest in stocks or assets with transparent and professional management.”
Erick said that SWF is expected to be a partner for foreign investors to invest in several attractive and priority sectors in Indonesia, including toll roads, airports and ports.
“We want to optimize the value of the assets owned by BUMN,” Erick said.
Meanwhile, Heri said that Japan generally supported the formation of the Indonesian SWF. Various Japanese business circles have also expressed interest in participating in various development projects in Indonesia.
“(The project includes) health tourism (health tourism) in Bali, management of port operators and increased investment in the Batang Industrial Estate,” Heri said.
Before the meeting with Hiroto, Luhut and Erick had also met with the General Secretary of the Upper House Liberal Democratic Party (PLD), Seko Hiroshige, who is the former Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan.
During the meeting, they discussed the Japanese parliament’s support for the Japanese government and private investment in SWF Indonesia and received a positive response.
In addition, on separate occasions, Luhut and Erick have also held a series of meetings with leaders of Japanese business circles, including Mitsui & Co, Mitsubishi Corp, Sojitz, Nippon Steel and Hanwa.
SWF Indonesia, which will start operations in early 2021, is destined to be one of the frameworks for Indonesia’s economic recovery, where the component of economic growth comes not only from domestic demand, but also from encouraging investment inflows.
By carrying out this operation, the Indonesian Government is also willing to inject an initial capital of IDR 75 billion for the formation of the NIA.
Luhut and Erick are scheduled to be in Tokyo, Japan until tomorrow Saturday (5/12/2020). In addition to the series of meetings taking place today, the two ministers will also meet with the Japanese economy minister, the governor of JBIC and representatives of various pension funds / financial groups.
