BISHKEK, KOMPAS.com – The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sooronbay Jeenbekov, declares his resignation to avoid bloodshed after a demonstration that lasted days.
“I do not want in history as a president to spill blood and shoot his own citizens,” Jeenbekov said in a statement.

Jeenbekov became the third president in the history of the Central Asian country to decide to resign due to increased mass action since 2005.
When he decided to resign, the president who was in power since 2017 asked for peace because the country was on the brink of conflict.
“The military and security forces will clearly use weapons to protect state buildings. Blood is also in danger of being spilled,” he said.
“For this reason, I ask both parties not to fall for the provocation,” said the 61-year-old president.
He also called on newly appointed Prime Minister Sadyr Khaparov and the opposition to withdraw their supporters from the capital, Bishkek.
The riots started after opposition mobs filled the streets of Bishkek and stormed the government building and demanded two things.
