1. Timor Leste Rontok
Through a referendum led by Australia and Portugal, Timor Leste officially separated from Indonesia on August 30, 1999.
Timor Leste has remained an independent country for 21 years. But instead of prospering, Timor Leste became the poorest country in the world.
Even though it was Indonesia’s 27th province at the time, the 25-year turmoil in the region made them want to become an independent country.

The referendum was held with the support of the United Nations (UN) which ended the bloody conflict there.
After becoming an independent and independent country from Indonesia, Timor Leste gained worldwide recognition only 3 years later.
The irony is that many Timorese today choose to return to Indonesia if given a second chance.
This was a great shock to many parties, due to the zeal of the citizens of Timor Leste in the late 20th century who wanted their own independence.
