This is what to do before, just before and after an earthquake.
Before:
– Make sure the structure and position of your house can avoid hazards caused by earthquakes, such as landslides or liquefaction. Assess and renovate your building structure to avoid earthquake hazards.
– Know the environment in which you work: observe the location of emergency doors, elevators and stairs. Also know where the safest place to shelter is.
– Learn to do first aid and fire extinguishers.
– Write down important phone numbers that can be called in the event of an earthquake.
– Arrange furniture so that it is firmly attached to the wall to prevent it from falling, collapsing or shifting during an earthquake.
– Place the heavy object as far as possible on the bottom. Check the stability of hanging objects that could fall during an earthquake
– Store flammable materials in a place not easily broken to avoid fire.
– Always turn off water, gas and electricity when not in use.
– Prepare the tools that should be in each place: first aid kit, flashlight / battery light, radio, food supplements and water.
When an earthquake occurs:
– If you are in a building: protect your body and head from debris by hiding under the table, find the safest place from debris and blows, run outside if still possible.
– If you are outside a building or in an open area: avoid the buildings around you, such as buildings, power poles, trees. Pay attention to where you are, avoid it if there is ground fracture.
– If you are driving: get off, get off and get away from the car avoid it in case of shift change or fire.
– If you live or are on the beach: stay away from the beach to avoid a tsunami hazard.
– If you live in a mountainous area: in the event of an earthquake, avoid areas where landslides may occur.
After the earthquake:
– If you are inside a building: exit the building in an orderly manner; do not use the elevator or lift, use the normal stairs, check for injuries, do first aid; call or ask for help if there is a serious injury to or around you.
– Control your environment: in case of fire, in case of gas leak, in case of electrical short circuit. Check the water flow and pipes, check for dangerous things.
– Do not enter a building that has been hit by an earthquake, because there may still be ruins.
– Do not walk in the area around the earthquake, there may still be a follow-up danger.
– Listen to information about earthquakes on the radio (in case of aftershocks). Do not be easily provoked by problems or news that are not clear sources.
– Complete a questionnaire provided by the appropriate agency to find out how much damage was caused.
– Don’t panic and don’t forget to always pray to God for the safety of all of us.
