DENPASAR, KOMPAS.com – Member of the DPD RI Electoral District of Bali, Shri I Gusti Ngurah Arya Wedakarna Mahendradatta Wedastraputra or commonly called AWK, clarified the accusation of a group of residents who called themselves insulting the beliefs of the Balinese people.

Residents protested AWK’s statement that Ida Bhatara, who resides or inhabits Pura Dalem Ped, Nusa Penida, is not a god.

In this regard, AWK said that his statement had a basis and there was nothing wrong.

According to him, the basis for this statement is found in verse 25 of chapter 9 of the book of the Bhagawadgita.

“It does exist, so what I really express is like reading a holy book. Right, it’s up to people to examine how it looks. There is a basis in the holy book, it’s just ordinary,” he said Wednesday.

According to AWK, each individual can see things from a different perspective. He considered that the sentence was not offensive either.

“We are open if it is not clear that we are going to have a dialogue,” he said.

He also explained what is related to the statement that allows free sex as long as condoms are used.

According to him, the context of the statement is because in Bali and Indonesia in general, the rate of early marriage is high.

Furthermore, condoms are also part of the way to suppress the spread of HIV / AIDS.

“Because talking to millennials, yes, as long as you use condoms. The goal is not to spread HIV and reduce AIDS and not early marriage,” he said.

It was previously reported that unrest had occurred when residents held a demonstration in front of the DPD RI Representative Office in Bali, in Jalan Cok Agung Tresna, Renon Denpasar, on Wednesday afternoon.

Residents considered that AWK’s statement through videos circulating on social media had insulted the Balinese.

According to him, as a member of the DPD, AWK should not talk about religion.

“If he is medical and intelligent, he should not talk like that. The DPD should not talk about religion, he has to learn a lot and he may not be happy reading,” he said.
