Southampton –
Big question for Juergen Klopp after Liverpool’s loss to Southampton. It’s a matter of his decision to play Jordan Henderson at center.
Liverpool, who have failed to win in their last two games, visit St Mary’s on Tuesday (1/5/2021), face Southampton. With a good record against the host, Liverpool are confident of winning.
But, with just two minutes to go, Liverpool’s goal was broken through Danny Ings to maximize Trent Alexander-Arnold’s error in blocking the free-kick ball.
The 1-0 lasted until the game ended and Liverpool continued their fast of victory, so they could not stay away from Manchester United from the second place in the table that had the same points, 33, but lost in productivity of goals.
Liverpool’s failure to win has drawn criticism of Klopp as a manager. The reason is that he dared to play with Jordan Henderson and Fabinho as central defender to accommodate Thiago Alcantara, Gini Wijnaldum and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain in midfield.
Even though Jordan Henderson is actually more effective when playing in the middle, which helps Liverpool’s attack flow. As for the center-back position, Liverpool still have Rhy Williams and Nathaniel Phillips, who played relatively well when they were deployed this season.
Perhaps if Henderson plays in his original position, Liverpool will have no problem finding goals because there are balls for all three attackers.
“It’s like you don’t trust your goalkeeper. Forget Van Dijk and Joe Gomez, they’re out,” said the former Liverpool defender who is now a pundit. Sky sports, Jamie Carragher, as quoted Mirror.
“But I think playing with Jordan Henderson as center-back will not help the two players on the bench (Phillips and Williams) at all. How do you feel when there are two midfielders playing in that position,” he continued on Liverpool’s game scheme.
“Tell me if they will be okay when played. Jordan Henderson is not a central defender. He was fighting today. He looked good, pretty good regardless of his original position.”
