The types of coronavirus in Indonesia are different from the 3 types in the world. The coronavirus in Indonesia is said to have mutated. Like what?

In a joint virtual meeting with DPR Commission VI, VII and IX on Tuesday (5/5/2020), the Minister of Research and Technology / Head of the National Agency for Research and Innovation Bambang Brodjonegoro said that Indonesia had sent 3 sequences Genome-Wide (WGS) to view the character COVID-19. All three are the first WGS sent by Indonesia.

“Yesterday (Institute for Molecular Biology) Eijkman sent or sent 3 WGS, complete genome sequencing to gisaid.org in an effort to view the characters of COVID-19, especially those located or circulating in Indonesia. These are the first 3 sequences of the complete genome “that Indonesia submitted to GISAID that collected the entire genome sequencing from various countries or all countries in the world,” said Bambang.

Bambang said the results of the three WGS analyzes were received this morning. WGS sent by Indonesia apparently entered another COVID type out of the 3 types in the world.

“This morning we received an update from Prof. Amin Subandrio, Head of Eijkman, on the analysis of 3 complete genome sequences sent to Indonesia. Until now, according to information from GISAID, there are 3 types of COVID-19 in the world, there are type S, type G and type V. Of the 3 types there are those called other types, so they have not been identified.

Bambang said WGS was needed as a step to find a Corona virus vaccine after a series of trials. The Ministry of Research and Technology will also work with other parties to develop vaccines, which are expected to take a year.

“When you complete entire genome sequences or make recombinant proteins to produce antigens, you do animal testing, in vivo, then human clinical trials, then you test on a production scale, and hopefully we can produce vaccines.” Bambang said.
